A (not so famous) quote by Mark Twain, author of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn. One way of interpreting it is that it's better to tell the truth than to lie. Another way is that if you're sure it's for the better, you should lie. I like the second one.

I prefer the first one. And a silent can be a good substitution of the truth or a lie.
Oh? But if you're trying to have, say, a surprise birthday party, being silent probably won't work.
Since silence can be taken as a yes as in 無言を同意と解釈する.
And good English! Just some minor details. "a silent" -> "silence" and "of the" -> "for the"
True. We should tell a lie in such a case. I like lies with tender thought.

The "silence" which I said did not literally mean a silence: I just think it is better to steer the conversation away from the topic in order to avoid tell the truth than tell a lie.
"silence"は文字通りの沈黙じゃなくて、嘘をつくよりは話題をそらしてどちらも言わないようにできたらいいなって思って。
（例えば誕生日とか日付の話をできるだけしないとか。）
Anyway, the best choice is depend on the situation.
